with Teresa Hepker

Batik is the ancient art of embellishing fabric using resists (for instance, beeswax) and dyes.
In this three day class, you will do two batik projects. The first project, completed the first day, teaches basic batik skills. You will try a variety of wax application tools, mix chemicals for a dye batch, dye your fabric, and remove the wax by boiling.
For the second project, you will design and create a wall hanging mounted on a large embroidery hoop. This project utilizes your new skills, and takes two days.
While you work, instructors will talk about the history of batik, share photos of batiks from other countries, and show examples of their work.
STUDENT TO BRING: dust mask, rubber gloves and an apron and/or wear old clothes. The dust mask is to protect you from dye and chemical dusts while mixing solutions. This is a hands-on class and the technique is messy.
Suitable for age 16 and older. At the first class a $10 fee for supplies paid to the instructor.
